Boat jobs to do, more than I wanted too

Well its just over a year now since we owned Yacht-Dione so it was time to get her out of the water and do some maintenance,

The List was ...

  • Antifoul

  • Scrap and retreat fin and bulb

  • Replace cutlass bearing

  • New anodes

  • Fix stress cracks on GRP

I added to the list.

  • Treat and re-Varnish wood inside saloon

  • Add two new leisure batteries

  • Add a Battery Monitor

  • Add new plug sockets to nav station - and add a few missing backboxes.

  • Fit new LED lights

  • Replace Bilge pump.

  • fit new Autopilot controller

Extra things that I didn't want to do but got added anyway

  • Replace leaking heater element

  • Replace Waterlock - because Vetus no longer make my type of fitting :-(

  • Remove prop shaft - because cutlass would not come out.

  • Add new screens into my splash hood - as mine had broke

Things learned.

Firstly if your boat comes out of the water every 2 years - set aside some money to replace things that may as well just get done, by this I mean some of the things we tried to do on my boat - were so old that replacing them was a struggle, for example the £80 cutlass bearing ended up costing me over £1000 - as the one on the boat was so old we had to cut it out and remove the prop shaft - this can be easily avoided if you replace them every few years - albeit not every 2 years for this but I would suggest every 4 years just replacing it. Check if some of your parts are still manufactured and supported if not and they are still working you can at least start to plan to replace them, I didn't have that luxury as my waterlock / muffler leaked from the seal at sea, I had to do what I could to fix it into place and get us back into the Marina as soon as I could, it turns out Vetus stopped making parts for my waterlock 19 years ago- and so I had no choice other than to buy a new one £400 I hadn't planned on spending :-( the upshot it if you look after them they should last 20 years

This is the part I needed,

But in the end I had to buy a brand new system

Anyway that's it for now, Dione is back in the water and hopefully she wont need anything else doing for a few years - don't get me wring I have a LONG list of things that need to be done, but for now I can get in a few trips and enjoy her , whilst I start saving for the next long list of things to do.

Looking forward to a happy sailing season and few nice local tips away with the family - check back for more blogs soon
